Contract expiry and rollover

What contract expiry means, why you need to select the next contract month and how it works with the 4:45 PM ET auto close.

Futures contracts have an expiry date. For this reason, each instrument is listed in several contract months, and you trade one contract month at a time.

What is a rollover?

Near the expiry of a contract, the trading volume moves to the next contract month. This move is called the rollover. To keep trading that instrument, you need to select the next contract month in your platform.

Things to remember

  • All positions close automatically at 4:45 PM ET, Monday to Friday. You cannot hold a position overnight or over the weekend, so you do not hold a contract into its expiry.

  • Your contract limit is the same for any contract month. 1 mini counts as 10 micros.

  • Only the allowed CME instruments can be traded. Read Instruments and contract limits.
